Jackson junior James Alexander was seventh at 51-5.5. Jones also was third in the discus at 165-5. Alexander was eighth at 141-5, followed by Gulliver Prep freshman Joseph Jackson at 139-9.
The Booker T. Washington 400 relay (Terrawn McPhee, Nigel Patten, Deltron Hopkins, Nicholas Norris) won state in 40.86. Jackson (Dashawn Smith, Adrian Williams, Desmond Phillips, Tyrone Thornton) was fourth in 41.96.
Hopkins, a Booker T. Washington junior, was runner-up in the 100 in 10.66. Thornton, a Jackson junior, was fourth in 10.69.
Booker T Washington junior Krondis Larry won the 400 in 47.16. Adrian William, a Jackson senior, was seventh in 48.95.
Sophomore Richie Cooper of Booker T. Washington was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 38.34. Edison senior Markey Joyner was seventh in 39.98.
Vaquan Small, a Booker T. Washington sophomore, was runner-up in the 800 in 1:55.76. D’Andre Smith of Archbishop Carroll was fourth in 1:55.98 and Pace freshman Dawun Hylton sixth in 1:57.92.
Booker T. Washington junior teammates Nigel Patten and Deltron Hopkins were second and third, respectively, in the 200 in 21.13 and 21.14.
Booker T. Washington’s 1,600 relay (Nigel Patten, Vaquan Small, Terrawn McPhee, Krondis Larry) was runner-up in 3:16.42.
Archbishop Carroll’s Amida Brimah was third in the high jump at 6-2. Thornton was fifth in the long jump at 22-8.75.
Freshman Gaby Correa of Ransom Everglades was seventh in the 1,600 in 4:24.8. Jeph Jean-Charles, a Jackson senior, was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.19.
Booker T. Washington was second of 59 schools.
• Jackson sophomore Shamaria Lovett won state in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in 42.96.
Ransom Everglades sophomore Nati Sheppard was runner-up in the pole vault at 11-0. Teammate Debbie Ajabe, an eighth-grader, was seventh in the discus at 110-3.
The Raiders 3,200 relay (Lauren Archer, Beatriz Ruan, Jatana Folston, Caroline Pryor) was fifth in 9:43.52.
The Jackson 400 relay (Kiera Mitchell, Taquilla Parmer, Nathaly Bellot, Ka’Dedra Thomas) was sixth in 48.56.
In the 400, Pace sophomore Sabrina Fontus was 10th in 59.06. In the 800, Ransom Everglades freshman Lauren Archer was fifth in 2:16.8.
The Pace 1,600 relay (Shaquita Smith, Sabrina Fontus, Nina Pulley, Tamicka Augustine) was eighth in 4:02.26.
Ransom Everglades was 10th of 53 schools.
Chase Perez-Blanco of Gulliver Prep won the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2A overall singles championship and teamed with Baker Newman to win the overall doubles title.
In girls, Gulliver Prep’s Julieta Dalmau and Olivia Thaler won the overall doubles title.
In Class 4A, Dr. Krop’s Alex Knight won the overall singles championship, and Alfredo Perez and Mirko Radosevic of Coral Gables High School captured the overall doubles title. Unrelated to high school tennis, Perez won the boys’ 16s title last year at the USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior State Singles Championship.
The annual state high school competition was in Altamonte Springs and Casselberry in the Orlando area. Individuals qualified for state by winning districts at No.1 singles and No.1 doubles. Teams advanced to state by placing top two at districts and then winning regionals.
Tennis right-sized for kids will be on display when Goodlet Park in Hialeah hosts a free tennis festival for families 3-5 p.m. May 18.
