Charges filed against couple that allegedly trashed Miami pet hospital after dog’s death

Prosecutors filed formal charges Friday against a California couple that allegedly trashed a Miami pet hospital after their American bulldog died in during surgery there.

Alejandra Zavaleta, 31, and Edwin Vargas, 34, are charged with burglary to an occupied structure, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Miami police say the couple last month took their dog, Reyez, for surgery to the Banfield Pet Hospital, which is located inside the PetSmart, 3301 SW 22nd St.

When the Oakland couple returned, staffers told them that Reyez had died. The couple became “extremely violent,” according to an arrest report, and began to break computers, printers, window blinds and other medical equipment. The damage was valued at over $5,000.

The couple had pleaded not guilty.
