Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria drives in 7 on amazing day

Never in his lifetime had Adeiny Hechavarria ever driven in seven runs in any one game. On Sunday, the Marlins’ light-hitting shortstop with the .169 average drove in seven in only two at-bats against Roy Halladay.

Hechavarria equaled a Marlins franchise mark with a bases-loaded triple in the first inning and a grand slam in the third. The seven RBI matched a record held by Cody Ross (2006), Gary Sheffield (1995) and Greg Colbrunn (1995).

“I have never done that since I started playing baseball when I was 9 years old,” said Hechavarria, who had driven in only 18 runs total in his first 185 major-league at-bats before Sunday. “Hopefully this helps us carry the momentum and we can continue to score some runs.’’

Ozuna on a tear

Giancarlo who?

Marcell Ozuna, the rookie outfielder called up from the minors after Giancarlo Stanton went on the disabled list, continued his hitting tear Sunday by going 4 for 5 with a walk and three RBI.

Ozuna, 22, has hit safely in each of his first six games and has gone 11 for 23 overall.

He hit his first big-league home run Saturday and nearly connected on another in Sunday’s first inning. The ball hit the top of the fence and was ruled a double after umpires looked at the replay.

Is Ozuna the spark that has been missing from the offense?

“What do you think?” outfielder Justin Ruggiano responded when asked that question. “I don’t have to state the obvious there. The kid’s locked in right now. We weren’t hitting too well before, and he comes in here and starts getting three hits a game, and I think everyone wants to follow suit. He’s making the game look easy now. Maybe that is the slap in the face that was needed.”

The 11 hits are the most ever by a Marlins rookie over his first six games.

Solano hurting

Second baseman Donovan Solano could be headed to the disabled list Monday if his injured left side doesn’t improve. Solano was a late scratch Saturday and didn’t play Sunday after he continued to experience soreness.

• Infielder Nick Green cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple A New Orleans. Green was designated for assignment last week.

• Even though it was a day game following a night game, catcher Miguel Olivo remained behind the plate for the Marlins on Sunday because of a cut on catcher Rob Brantly’s right index finger.

As expected, Austin Kearns was placed on the bereavement list after leaving the team to tend to a family matter in Kentucky. The Marlins recalled catcher Kyle Skipworth from New Orleans to fill his roster spot. Kearns can spend up to seven days on the bereavement list.
