Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives were investigating a murder that happened when a man was shot as he drove onto Interstate 95 in Oakland Park just before dawn Sunday.

The man, who was driving a silver Buick, drove into the guardrail as he entered the southbound lanes of the highway at Commercial Boulevard. Upon impact, the car’s engine burst into flames. The victim, whose name has not been released, was found shot to death in the car, according to BSO spokeswoman Danielle Moschella.

Authorities suspect that the incident began at a Waffle House on Powerline Road, just south of Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park.

As a result of the shooting, the southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for more than two hours Sunday morning. The highway was reopened about 11 a.m.
