Coral Gables Rotary names Leona Cooper its Citizen of the Year

The Rotary Club of Coral Gables will present the annual Coral Gables Martin Hughes Citizen of the Year Award to Leona Cooper on Thursday, May 23, at the Rotary Club luncheon meeting at the Coral Gables Country Club.

This is the eighth year the club has honored the memory of Rotarian Martin Hughes with this award. He conceived it to recognize Coral Gables citizens who displayed generosity and commitment to philanthropy and service in concert with the principles of Rotary.

Past honorees are Betsy Adams, Dr. Arnold Mannis, Teresa Rodriguez, David Lawrence, Robert Fewell, Roxcy Bolton and Judge Steven Leifman.

Award recipients must have lived in Coral Gables for five years, been involved in several different fields of community service, have contributed for more than one year, and whose contributions are generally recognized.

This year’s honoree, Ms. Cooper is a longtime resident of Coral Gables and the mother of five, grandmother of six and great-grandmother of one. Born Leona Helen Ferguson on June 30, 1932 in Nassau, Bahamas, she moved to Miami at age 14, and has lived in the 200 block on Washington Drive in Coral Gables for most of her life.
