Sergio Martinez defended his WBC middleweight championship belt by beating previously undefeated Martin Murray in a unanimous 12-round decision at the Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires.

Despite suffering a cut to his left eye in round six and being sent to the ground in round eight, the 38-year-old Martinez (51-2-2) persevered by outboxing the British fighter in the final two rounds.

Murray (25-1-1) delivered several hard jabs to Martinez, including a big right in the 10th round, but Martinez controlled the earlier rounds to help him earn three winning cards of 115-112.

The fight saw an estimated 50,000 fans in attendance.
