7-year-old boy suffers burns while home alone in Lauderhill

A 7-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Thursday night for second-degree burns after being left home alone in Lauderhill.

Officials say the child was handling either matches or a lighter in his home at 4222 Inverrary Blvd.

Arrangements were made for the boy to go home afterschool with a classmate, but the 7-year-old decided to go to his home by himself, according to Lauderhill police Lt. Michael Butkus.

“We’re still trying to piece together what happened but we know the child did not listen and went home on his own,” Butkis said.

The boy called 911 and was taken to Broward Health later that evening.

Authorities are speaking to the mother and investigating the incident. Charges have not yet been filed.
