SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE

Woman killed when SUV strikes her outside Miami-Dade church

A woman died Tuesday afternoon outside Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Southwest Miami-Dade after a sport utility vehicle pinned her against a wall.

Miami-Dade police said 73-year-old Nuris Better lost control of her SUV about 4:30 p.m. outside the church’s school at Southwest 112th Street and 139th Avenue.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue cut down a palm tree to move the SUV and free the pinned woman, Catalina Gomez Pelaez, 27, but she died at the scene. Gomez-Pelaez was at the school to pick up a relative's children.

“The children were in a building close by. At no time were they in any danger,” Mary Ross Agosta, spokeswoman for the Archdiocese, told Miami Herald news partner CBS4.

Police said they did not know how the accident happened, and were investigating.

Better was not charged.
