Just six days after her Boston Marathon victory, Tatyana McFadden (Clarksville, M.D.) celebrated her 24th birthday by capturing the women's wheelchair race in the London Marathon, held April 21. Smashing the course record with a time of 1:46:02, McFadden dedicated her win to the city of Boston in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. Fellow American Amanda McGrory (Kennet Square, Penn.) placed second.

TEAM USA SOARS IN FED CUP

Venus Williams (Saginaw, Mich.) and Serena Williams (Saginaw, Mich.) led Team USA to victory over Sweden, 3-2, at the 2013 Fed Cup World Group Playoff, held April 21 in Delray Beach, Fla. After eight match points, Venus Williams put away Sweden's Johanna Larsson, 6-3, 7-5, marking her first Fed Cup tie in 10 attempts. The win guarantees the U.S. a spot in the coveted 2014 Fed Cup World Group.

BASKETBALL

Jabari Parker (Chicago, Ill.) led the U.S. Men's Junior National Select Team with 22 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks at the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit, held April 20 in Portland, Ore. The U.S. lost 112-98 to the World Team.

BOWLING

The University of Nebraska captured first place at the NCAA Bowling Championship, held April 11-13 in Canton, Mich. In a tightly contested series, the Huskers defeated Vanderbilt University with consecutive victories in the sixth (196-189) and seventh (246-200) games.

CURLING

The U.S. Women's Senior Curling Team was eliminated from playoff contention at the 2013 World Senior Curling Championships, held April 13-20 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Margie Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) and Lucy DeVore (Superior, Wis.) lost to Canada, 6-4, to finish with a 3-3 record in Group A.

On the men's side, Gert Messing (Hartsdale, N.Y.) and teammates Dennis Mellerup (Hoboken, N.J.), Bill Nickle (Long Valley, N.J.), Bill Peskoff (Glen Gardner, N.J.) and alternate Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.) also missed the playoff cut with a 7-5 loss to Canada. The U.S. men concluded the tournament with a 4-5 record that included victories over Russia and Germany.

In mixed doubles, husband-wife duo Peter Stolt (Plymouth, Minn.) and Maureen Stolt (Plymouth, Minn.) ended their rookie appearance on a high note as they defeated Japan, 10-1. Their run at the playoffs was cut short with a 6-5 loss to New Zealand.

CYCLING

Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif.) earned a podium spot in the first round of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, held April 20 in Manchester, England. Crain rode her way to second place, while fellow Americans Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn.) and Arielle Matin (East Spanaway, Wash.) claimed fourth and sixth place.

Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev.) finished in fifth place behind winner Liam Phillips of Great Britain. After winning the semifinal, Fields became the lone American riding in the main event.

DIVING

Sibling duo Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) and Dwight Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) claimed fourth place in the men's 3-meter synchronized springboard event at the 2013 FINA Diving World Series, held April 19-21 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Troy Dumais capped the weekend with another fourth place finish in the men's 3-meter springboard semifinal.

FENCING

The U.S. Women's Saber Team took home gold at the 2013 Junior World Championships, held April 6-15 in Porec, Croatia. With a final score of 45-38, Adrienne Jarocki (Middle Village, N.Y.) sealed the victory for Team USA in the final bout against France.

    Bob Bryan (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.) and Mike Bryan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) became the first mens doubles team in the Open-era to hold all four major titles along with an Olympic gold medal after winning the mens doubles final at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, held June 29-July 7 in London. The sibling duo earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over to the Croatian/Brazilian pairing of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the final. With the win, the Bryan brothers earned their 15th Grand Slam title and improved their record as the winningest mens pairing of all time.

    Russia's interior minister said Friday that 37,000 police officers have been deployed to protect the 2014 Winter Games in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, repeating official assurances to make the Olympics safe despite the threat of an Islamist insurgency in the region.
