Local student earns $4,000 National Achievement Scholarship

Yael Levy of the School for Advanced Studies has been awarded the $4,000 National Achievement Boule Foundation Scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Yael will receive the scholarship for four years during her college education. She was chosen based on her academic record and Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test scores during her junior year of high school.


The winners of the Jennifer Beth Turken Heart Award from Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center, in Miami Beach, are Aracely Gimenez, Santiago Machado, Camelajulia Malagayo, Paulina Caceres, Liana Adaza, Alejandro Martinez, Alexa Milian, Zoe Zen, Shayla Coriolan, Kassandra Caballero, Michelle Chinchilla, Rafael Vertiz, Grey Vazquez, Brooklyn Contes, Mebelin Molina, Manolo Maranges and Jeremiah Fernandez.

These students were awarded for being examples in their school and showing kindness towards their peers. Winners attended an ice cream party and received certificates.


Matthew Sarduy, Elizabeth Massiello, David Segall, Victoria Garcia and Julian Rosario of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School in Hialeah have qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program due to their high scores of 95 or better on a qualifying Iowa Assessment subtest.

Students will participate in scholarship recognition programs and take the American College Test and the Scholastic Assessment Test.


Coral Reef Senior High School student Juan Velasquez received an appointment to the United States Military Academy in West Point. Juan is currently in the International Baccalaureate Academy.

Candidates for admission must apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination — usually from a senator or representative.


The Goddesses Dance Team of Hialeah Gardens High School are the 2013 national champions after competing at the National Dance Alliance Championship at Universal Studios in Orlando. The team was also recognized for having the highest scores of the three varsity groups who made the finals and the team received awards for superior showmanship, choreography and technique.

Participants include Katelyn Jimenez, Victoria Romo, Oyaneicy Moya, Jackelyn Ochoa, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nathalie Roque, Vanessa Salcedo, Yoannelis Bravo, Claudia Hernandez, Amanda Fabian and Melissa Rufin.
