The town of Davie has mailed ballots to registered voters to gauge whether they support raising taxes that would pay to place a police officer in every school.
Davie posts officers in its middle and high schools, but after the Sandy Hook shootings last fall, the town added police to the elementary schools.
But after six weeks, the officers were pulled from the elementary schools, when the Davie Police Department said it was too much of a financial strain.
Although the straw ballot on the tax increase is non-binding, there are also 12 initiatives on the ballot dealing with charter amendments proposed by an advisory council.
Ballots must be returned by Tuesday. They can be returned by mail or dropped off at the Davie Town Hall at 6591 Orange Drive by 4 p.m., or at the Supervisor of Elections Office at 115 S. Andrews Ave., Room 102 in Fort Lauderdale or the branch office at the Lauderhill Mall at 1501 NW 40th Ave. by 7 p.m.
