The American baseball team kicked off GMAC play with an extra-inning, walk-off 5-4 win over Coral Gables that came in unconventional fashion in rainy conditions Monday.
With the score tied at 4 in the bottom of the eighth, Kendrick Gutierrez — who went 2 for 3 with an RBI — found himself on second with one out when he bolted for third off a wild pitch in the dirt.
The Coral Gables catcher, after blocking the pitch, then made an errant throw over the third baseman’s head in an attempt to get the out. Gutierrez was able to score easily on the error.
The Patriots, who had previously been struggling, now advance to the GMAC semifinals where they will face Ferguson at South Dade High on Wednesday.
“We’ve bene scuffling. We’ve been losing some close games. The ball hasn’t been bouncing our way,” American coach Ricky Gutierrez said. “Today, we got some breaks. I think we’re peaking at the right time.”
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, American forced extra innings when Steve Dituglia scored Ronnie Williams — who was pinch-running in the late-game situation — on a sacrifice fly.
Williams, who is working his way back from a forearm injury, also started the game, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up three earned runs off seven hits. Andy Figueroa was the winning pitcher for the Patriots after retiring the side in the eighth.

Treyon Garnett earned Miami Herald All-Dade second-team honors this past season while the other four were all honorable mentions.
All played in the Dade-Broward All-Star Game, minus Trevon Garnett — twin brother of Treyon — who participated in the Public-Private All-Star Game.
