WFOR-Channel 4’s Shannon Hori and WSVN-Channel 7’s Belkys Nerey, two of the city’s main prime time news stars, are having mountains of problems with houses.
Hori is rumored to be leaving the station by June, when her contract is up — and that couldn’t come at a worse time.
Hori and her husband, real estate agent Kendall Cogan, are fighting foreclosure of their homestead in Coral Gables.
“We’re working diligently to get the bank to work with us,” said the couple’s attorney, Bruce Jacobs. “But the bank has made no effort for a settlement.”
The battle is over a $738,000 mortgage the couple signed in 2007 to buy a $923,000 home in the Granada section of the Gables.
Two years later, with the couple saddled with high medical bills to treat the heart illness of one of their newborns, mortgage bankers Aurora Loan Services started the foreclosure proceedings.
“We made our decision to buy the house at a time when my restaurants were doing well,” Cogan said. “That changed. The baby was born with a congenital heart defect. Everything changed.”
At the Fox affiliate WSVN, meanwhile, longtime anchor Nerey was just cited by the city of Miami for not registering a “blighted, unsecured or abandoned” house that she owns in Wynwood.
The investment property is for sale for $170,000, but Nerey was fined $250 for the code violations after successfully staving off foreclosure.
“This problem has been taken care of,” Nerey wrote in an email.
Said attorney Jacobs: “The banks have created a problem that cuts through the entire economic spectrum.”
Wedding, part deux
