Yom Hazikaron, or Memorial Day, begins Sunday night in Israel to memorialize the more than 25,000 soldiers that died fighting to protect the state of Israel.  A national ceremony was held Sunday night at the Western Wall and a two-minute siren will wail throughout the country on Monday to honor the fallen victims.

“We do not forget, even for a second, that we are here thanks to the fallen,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday.

As night falls in Israel Monday, the Memorial Day holiday will end and the start of Yom Haatzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, will begin. Yom Ha'atzmaut centres around the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel by former Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, on 14 May 1948. This was declared eight hours before the end of the British Mandate which was due to finish on 15 May 1948. The Independence Day celebration is traditionally marked by barbecues, fireworks and outdoor concerts.
