Crusaders, Patriots take District 16-1A team titles

Dade Christian’s boys and Florida Christian’s girls hope Thursday afternoon’s District 16-1A championship performances springboard their teams to strong finishes in the coming weeks.

The two squads swept the team titles at Dade Christian with balanced efforts.

The Dade Christian boys, who finished a state runner-up last season in Class 1A, have their sights set on a potential state run thanks to a squad that is strong in both running and field events.

The Crusaders are led by several athletes who starred on the team’s Class 2A state runner-up football team that made school history with a 13-1 record.

Senior Aaron Batten won the sprint events Thursday by winning the 100 (11.45) and 200 meters (23.56). Junior Jonathan Saintil won the long jump (20-1) and triple jump (44-9 1/2) and senior Andrew Florvil won the shot put (51-6 1/2) and discus (123-0).

But coach Shavar Jackson, who is in his seventh season coaching the Crusaders, said the key to winning state may be his team’s performances in the distance events.

Senior Adam Ramos won the 1,600 meters (4:49.94) and 3,200 meters (10:39.46) Thursday, and the Crusaders won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays. Junior Caleb Mallory, who won the high jump (5-10), also won the 800 meters (2:08.58).

“We’re putting together strong efforts right now in the field events and our jumps and relays are coming along, but the distance guys would give us all we need,” Jackson said. “It’s been a good carryover from a strong football season, as it usually tends to happen with our teams.”

Florida Christian won its first district title since 2010, finishing 45 points ahead of runner-up Westminster Christian.

The Patriots took a comfortable lead after a strong performance in the field events that was bolstered by junior Marina Gatinho.

Gatinho dominated the jumping events by winning all three. Gatinho finished the high jump with a height of 4-10, the long jump in 16-3 1/2 feet and the triple jump in 34-6.

Senior Carly Rowsey won the pole vault (8-6) and junior Melinda Diaz won the discus (87-2).

Sophomore Victoria Camargo bolstered the Patriots once again in the distance events by winning the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races and finishing second in the 800.
