For those who claim that the Sony Open tournament is the fifth Grand Slam of tennis I’ve got news for you, CBS doesn’t think so as the network took it off air just before the deciding tiebreaker of the final set between Andy Murray and David Ferrer to switch to a basketball game that was decided by 20 points. They wouldn’t have done that if they were showing a Grand Slam final. In addition, for various reasons, top-ranked players didn’t participate; nine men and four women retired before finishing their matches; and the match between Murray and Ferrer was disappointing.
Factor in that multi-billionaire Larry Ellison has decided to invest millions in his Indian Wells, Calif., tournament where the desert weather is dry, the facility is great with ample parking and is played just before our Sony, I’d say that at least for 2013, the Sony Open wasn’t the fifth major. Watch out for Doha or Shanghai in the future!
