AT&T plans to add dozens of well-paying jobs to a Miami sales center dedicated to Spanish-speaking buyers of its U-verse service.
The communications giant announced it is adding about 350 new positions in Florida, with most of them in the South Florida area. The Miami center is the company’s largest Spanish-language sales center for U-verse, which delivers high-speed Internet, cable and telephone service to homes.
Gov. Rick Scott toured the call center, met workers wearing “Yo Soy AT&T” T-shirts, and made remarks announcing the hiring plans. “Thank you again for 350 more jobs for Florida families,” Scott told AT&T President Marshall Criser.
The call center has staffed Spanish operators in Miami since the 1970s, but AT&T recently consolidated Spanish U-verse sales there. It has a similar facility in Chicago, but the Miami operation at 600 NW 79th Avenue is by far the larger of the two, said sales director Gregory Acevedo. While ostensibly a bilingual call center, the facility is designed to field calls from Spanish-speaking AT&T customers who don’t subscribe to U-verse but live in neighborhoods where the service is available. After operators walk customers through whatever issue they are having with AT&T, they then pitch U-verse, executives said.
Since operators can earn commissions on sales, the typical worker earns $50,000 to $80,000 a year, Acevedo said. “It’s a very lucrative position,” he said. Several workers approached by a reporter confirmed the range Acevedo cited.
Luis Llopiz, who came to Miami from Cuba about five years ago, worked at a Macy’s call center before coming to AT&T. He has been on the job for about four years, and said the pay can top $80,000 if sales are strong. “I can tell you, it’s a good living,” he said. “I’m trying to listen to people and resolve their problems. And push all the numbers and move sales.”
