Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, will be the godmother of the Royal Princess when it is inaugurated in June, Princess Cruises announced Tuesday.
Princess Cruises’ newest ship will be named on June 13 in Southampton, England, in a traditional ceremony that will also include the blessing, a performance by the Royal Marines Band and the pipers of the Irish Guards. The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess will spend the summer in Europe, then move to Fort Lauderdale in the fall.
“We are delighted that the Duchess will launch our new ship and can think of no better way to celebrate our company’s British heritage and our commitment to the country,” said Alan Buckelew, the line’s president and CEO.
Princess Cruises is a division of Carnival Corp., which already has a history of royal godmothers. Queen Elizabeth is godmother of her namesake ship, which Cunard – also a division of Carnival Corp. – launched in 2010. The Queen also named two other Cunard ships.
