TEAM OF THE WEEK

The surging St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ track team pulled off an incredible sweep of the 400-meter relay (U.S. No. 5 46.49), 800-meter relay (U.S. No. 1 1:37.53), distance medley (12:20.79), 3,200-meter relay (U.S. No. 2 9:15.60) and 1,600-meter relay at the Florida Relays. Two-time 400-meter state champion Kendall Ellis ran on the 400 relay, 800 relay and 1,600 relay, in which she, Alon Lewis, Toria Levy and Krystal Sparling clocked a nation-leading 3:40.74 to break a nine-year-old meet record.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Jacob Albo and Camilo Escobar, Sagemont, boys’ tennis: Albo and Escobar won at singles and teamed for a No. 1 doubles victory to lead the Lions to the District 14-1A title.

Victoria Hickman, Nova, girls’ water polo: Hickman had three goals to lead the Titans over South Broward 4-3.

Jorge Solano, Coral Springs Charter, baseball: Solano went 3 for 4 with two RBI to lead the Panthers over Aquinas 16-3.

Kali Davis-White, Boyd Anderson, girls’ track: Davis-White finished second in the 100 (U.S. No. 2 11.51) and 200 (U.S. No. 3 23.71), and she led the Cobras’ 400-meter relay team (45.91) and 800-meter relay team (U.S. No. 4 1:37.87) to victories at the Arcadia Invitational.

Carlos Penaranda, Pines Charter, boys’ track: The rising sophomore won the 1,600 meters in a Florida No. 11 time of 4:22.41 and led the Jaguars’ 3,200 relay team to fourth place at the Florida Relays.

Jose Colina, Chaminade, baseball: Colina went 3 for 3 with 4 RBI to lead the Lions over Lake Highland Prep 6-4.

Daesha Rogers, American Heritage, girls’ track: The 8th grade sensation clocked a U.S. No. 6 2:11.69 to win the 800 and led the Patriots’ 3,200 relay team to fourth place at the Florida Relays.

Sami Feller, Douglas, softball: Feller’s double in the seventh inning sparked a four-run rally as the Eagles (13-5) upset Coral Springs Charter 7-4.

Hayley Holbrook, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ lacrosse: Holbrook had four goals and an assist to lead the Raiders (11-2) over Cardinal Newman 15-2.

Pierina Imparato, Cypress Bay, girls’ tennis: The freshman won the No. 1 singles and was part of the No. 1 doubles winning duo to lead the Lightning to the District 12-4A girls’ title.

Jerimy Strainge, American Heritage, boys’ track: Strainge teamed with Isaiah McKenzie, Walter Tucker and Torrance Gibson to lead the Patriots’ 400-meter relay team to a nation-leading and meet record 40.49 and also led the 1,600 relay to third place at the Florida Relays.

Wecley Levros, South Broward, boys’ volleyball: Levros had 11 kills to lead the Bulldogs (12-5) over Everglades in three sets.

Alexis Berger, Western, flag football: Berger scored a touchdown and had two interceptions to lead the Wildcats (3-2) over Taravella 12-6.

Matthew Butler, St. Thomas Aquinas, boys’ track: Butler led the Raiders’ 3,200-meter relay team to victory in a Florida No. 2 time of 7:57.97 at the Florida Relays.

The Monarch softball team won a 5-4 thriller at Coral Springs on Monday.

Stefany Collins led the Knights (14-3) to victory with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Kaylyn Kirk earned her 14th win of the season on the mound by pitching a complete game, striking out five and giving up three earned runs. Kirk surrendered the one-run Monarch lead in the bottom of the sixth but shut the door on the Colts in the seventh to seal the deal.

Collins finished 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI. She also drove in two additional runs on a blistering double off the left-field wall to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth.

BASEBALL

Pines Charter earned a key victory to pull above .500 on the year, beating visiting South Broward 4-1 on Monday.

Patrick Mitchell struck out three in his three scoreless innings of work in relief for the win, his first.

The Jaguars (8-7) trailed 1-0 early but tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and then pulled away with a three-run fifth with Micah Baxter-Miller’s two-run base hit in the middle of it.

Derick Garcia went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

MORE SOFTBALL

Danica McCabe showed why she’s one of the top softball players in Broward County on Monday leading Chaminade to a 3-2 home win against University School.

Not only did McCabe strike out seven and give up just two earned runs off four hits in her complete game on the mound for her 13th win of the season, she also had the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to break the 2-2 tie.
