Re the April 5 article Mother Teresa’s nuns can keep feeding the poor, Miami says: I used to work in the area and have visited the Missionaries of Charity shelter. It is an international embarrassment that the city was pressuring such a well-respected charity for trying to help Miami’s residents without even asking for public funding to do so.
Commissioner Willy Gort and city officials should focus their efforts on addressing the fact that their city has one of the worst poverty rates in the nation, especially in that area, with innocent people being shot on a regular basis in gang warfare, instead of trying to stop nuns from providing soup to a hungry person. The Sisters didn’t bring poverty to that area, the poverty brought the sisters there. And I thank God they came.
