Re the April 1 story Debate grows over merit pay plan for teachers in Florida: State Sen. Anitere Flores’ proposed fix to link “teacher evaluations to the students they actually teach” does not address the problem of assessing job performance for those who teach history, foreign languages or physical education.
Should state senators be evaluated on how well their constituents read the state constitution? Students will be taking a state reading comprehension test.A history teacher can motivate his students to read and write, and this may have some considerable effect on his students’ standardized test scores, but that is mere conjecture.
If testing can demonstrate a teacher’s effectiveness, then create end-of-year exams in every subject. Until then, teachers teaching non-core classes have a right to grieve.
