A high-speed chase that wound its way from Doral to a Miramar neighborhood ended when police cornered and arrested a man who stole a taxi from the Dolphin Mall.
The chase began about 6 p .m. after the suspect sped off in a taxi he pilfered from the mall. Police from Doral, Sweetwater and several other cities pursued him as he flew north on the Florida Turnpike at more than 100 miles per hour, according to reports.
With TV helicopters flying overhead, the chase continued as the taxi exited on Interstate 75, and, with police in hot pursuit, continued onto the Miramar Parkway before he abandoned the vehicle at Flamingo Road and fled swiftly on foot. Police gave chase, and the suspect was captured after he was struck by a car behind a Kohls department store at 12200 Miramar Parkway.
Sweetwater police arrested Lazaro Ricardo Castellon, 33, of Hialeah. He was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.
