I’m currently a Citizens Property Insurance policyholder and I’m worried that I don’t have adequate coverage and in the event a major storm hits Florida, I could also be on the hook for additional assessments simply because Citizens doesn’t have the resources to recover from a major storm.
To that end, I was encouraged to read in the March 8 article Insurance bill likely to hike rates that the Legislature is considering a provision that would allow Citizens to make loans to mutual companies in an effort to depopulate the state-run program and offer consumers more choices. This would serve to remove policyholders from Citizens, like myself, who don’t want to be there and give us a chance to have higher quality insurance coverage, while lowering Citizens’ exposure.
I’m hopeful that the Legislature will continue down this track and that this program will soon be a reality.
