The legislation now rushing through the Florida Legislature would abolish county ordinances like those enacted in South Florida on wage theft. Promoted by the GOP and the Florida Retail Federation, Associated Builders and Contractors and other powerful business lobbies, changes to current laws will also preempt domestic violence leave, equal benefit ordinances, earned sick time and any other benefit that local governments have or might put in place for the protection of local workers.
The Texas Workers Defense Project cited wage theft as a huge problem in a lot of low wage industries.
There, one in five construction workers experience wage theft and other issues such as calling workers independent contractors, cutting corners with safety and threatening workers with deportation or their jobs.
These are now normal practices.
