I was thrilled to be awakened at 6 a.m. Tuesday to the sound of a Bell JetRanger in a hover over the house across the street. It was taping an accident on I-95. I know it was Channel 4 because it was the only one to be showing it.
I am a pilot, helicopter rated with JetRanger time. I know well what one looks and sounds like. The captain kept it there for at least 15 minutes — I guess to get a shot of a broken bone or flowing blood to further inform the public.
Maybe I have a vivid imagination that allows me to figure out what “accident, I-95 southbound, Northwest 151st Street, all lanes blocked” means.
Any pilot with a sense of decency and safety could have planted the JetRanger in a hover over Northwest Seventh Avenue, which has plenty of parking lots, in case of engine or tail rotor failure. There are a lot fewer houses underneath filled with people who deserve better treatment.
