Police said Sunday they were hunting for a hit-and-run SUV driver who struck a bicyclist in North Miami-Dade, dragged him for about 50 feet and then took off without stopping.
The adult victim died at the site of the crash, according to Det. Roy Rutland, a Miami-Dade police spokesman.
Rutland said traffic homicide detectives interviewed witnesses who told them the bicyclist was riding east on the southern edge of Northwest 151st Street before dawn when a newer-model Dodge Durango ran him down from behind near Second Avenue.
The driver dragged the victim and then stopped twice to maneuver and dislodge the bicyclist, witnesses said.
When the driver freed the victim from the car, he sped east to Biscayne River Drive and then south, witnesses told police.
Police have not identified the victim.
They continued to hunt Sunday afternoon for the sport utility vehicle, which police described as light in color with minor front-end damage.
