Padres prospect Kelly to have Tommy John surgery

San Diego Padres pitching prospect Casey Kelly will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

He will meet with orthopedic surgeon James Andrews on April 1 and will undergo the operation the following day.

The 23-year-old last pitched on March 7 as he felt discomfort in his elbow the next day. He will miss the entire 2013 season while recovering from the procedure.

He made his MLB debut last season and over six starts he went 2-3 with a 6.21 earned run average.
