Coral Springs beats Taravella after big first inning

From Miami Herald Staff Reports

In a bizarre but dramatic game, the Coral Springs baseball team defeated Taravella 6-5 on Thursday.

In the bottom of the first inning, Coral Springs had runners on first and third. As the Trojans’ catcher tried to catch Vinny Cerullo stealing second, the ball became lodged in the second baseman’s jersey and a rarely seen “lodging” call was made. This allowed not only Cerullo to advance to second, but the runner on third base scored. Cerullo eventually scored on a single by David Alessio, and sophomore Michael Montalvo’s two-run homer brought the lead to 5-0 — all in the first inning.

But the momentum was shortlived for the Colts, and Taravella nearly came back in the seventh when it scored four runs. With two outs and the potential tying and go-ahead runners on base, Colts pitcher Jordan Barrett was relieved by Matt Messina. A popout ended the game.

•  Saint Brendan 10, Archbishop McCarthy 7: Saint Brendan pulled ahead of Archbishop McCarthy behind a grand slam from catcher Fabian Pena.

Down 7-4, Pena came through to give the Sabres a one-run lead. Two more runs were added in the sixth and seventh innings. Pena went 2 for 5 with four RBI and pitcher Matt Diaz earned his third win of the season.
