Cortez’s pitching, Fernandez’s hitting lead Brito

Miami Herald Staff Reports

Brito’s ability to work the count, predict pitches and get runners on base allowed it to pick up a 7-3 win over Westwood Christian on Tuesday.

Transfer senior Angel Cortez, who is now 6-0 on the mound, pitched the bulk of the game. According to athletic director Lazaro Fundora, Cortez had very little experience before he transferred, but has proven to be an integral part of the pitching staff.

“[Cortez] has gone in inning after inning and beat the big teams.” Fundora said. “He is what we call a diamond in the rough.”

Savian Fernandez had three hits, including a homer, and knocked in three runs.

Brito (12-1) will face Champagnat on Thursday night at Milander Park, which will be its last game before the spring break tournaments begin.
