I recently served as a judge for the Silver Knight Award in science for Broward County high school seniors. I was so impressed and moved by these students’ dedication, passion and incredible intelligence. The students had more than impressive academic grades, they also demonstrated a profound compassion for those less fortunate, along with a commitment to making life better for them. They were mature beyond their years, and I know that somewhere down the line, I’ll hear their names associated with some wonderful advancement that will make the world a better place.
I ended each interview asking: Not counting any family member, who is your hero, living or dead, and why? More often than not, it was not some internationally known figure, but rather a teacher. I don’t think that there’s any greater compliment that a teacher, or anyone for that matter, can receive. This unforgettable experience was proof that teaching is, and will always be, the most important profession in our society.
