U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, of Ohio, a staunch opponent of gay marriage, does a Mitt Romney flip-flop on the issue when his son informs him that he has been gay since he can remember. Suddenly Portman supports gay marriage. Dick Cheney, another conservative and outspoken gay-rights opponent, reverses his stance, too. Oh, and coincidentally, Cheney’s daughter is gay.
I applaud their newfound respect for marriage equality despite their morally pragmatic views. Who knows what philosophical reversals might occur if conservatives discover they have close family members who are victims of gun violence, on Medicaid or in desperate need of the coverage Obamacare provides?
