TEAM OF THE WEEK

The Sunset boys’ volleyball team defeated defending state champion Orlando Bishop Moore to win the Smoothie King Volleyball Invitational. The Knights’ 25-22, 25-20 victory was keyed by Juan De La Hoz, who earned tournament MVP honors.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Ivan Nunez, Braddock, baseball: Nunez went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Bulldogs to the victory over Sunset.

Erik Manoah, South Dade, baseball: Manoah struck out 15 to lead the Bucs to a 2-0 district win against rival Killian.

Stephanie Texeira, Gulliver, softball: Texiera pitched a two-hitter against Kissimmee Osceola and hit two home runs against LaBelle to help the Raiders reach the finals of the Blue bracket of the SlamFest.

Kelli Kleiss, Westminster Christian, softball: Kleiss pitched a complete game, striking out six and went 3 for 3 with an RBI in a 3-2 win over Palm Beach Gardens at the SlamFest.

Jean Souiten, South Dade, boys’ track and field: Souiten won the 100, 200 and 400 meters to lead the Bucs’ boys to the Viper Invitational title.

Frederick Jones, Monsignor Pace, boys’ track and field: Jones won the shot put and discus at the Bob Hayes Invitational.

Lloydricia Cameron, Northwestern, girls’ track and field: Cameron won the shot put and discus at the Bob Hayes Invitational.

Alex Knight, Krop, boys’ tennis: Knight won his No. 1 singles matches to lead the Lightning to wins over defending state champion Weston Cypress Bay and Plantation American Heritage.

Olivia Thaler and Estefania Navarro, Gulliver, girls’ tennis: Thaler and Navarro earned all-tournament honors to lead the Raiders to a third-place finish at the DecoTurf Championships in Louisville.

Kory Schulz and Tarek Saade, Palmetto, boys’ volleyball: Schulz had 27 kills and 24 digs in wins against Southwest and Killian, and Saade had 33 assists combined in wins against Archbishop McCarthy and Park Vista.

Herzen Cortes and Enrique Lam, Belen, boys’ water polo: Cortes and Lam had four goals each to lead the Wolverines to a 14-6 win against Columbus.

Chelsea Johnson, Ransom, girls’ water polo: Johnson had several goals, including six against Coconut Creek as the Raiders beat Pines Charter and Palmetto also at the Gulliver Invitational.

Andrew Huang, Palmetto, badminton: Huang won his boys’ singles match to lead the Panthers to a 6-4 win against Southwest.

Sarina Abramowitz, Hebrew Academy, flag football: Abramowitz threw three touchdown passes, ran for another and finished with 145 total yards in a 25-14 win against Mater Lakes.

Miami Herald Staff Reports

The Monsignor Pace softball team earned a hard-fought extra-inning victory on the road Monday afternoon at Archbishop Carroll.

Sofia Dominguez, who went 3 for 4 on the day, drove in Janelle Gonzelez for the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning.

Briana Heredia earned the win, pitching a complete game and giving up just two runs in eight innings of work while striking out 10. She shut down the Bulldogs in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the Spartan (10-8) victory.

Archbishop Carroll trailed 3-0 and was down to its last three outs, but was able to manufacture two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra frame.
