Archibishop Wenski, tried to explain away Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga’s “unfortunate and imprudent” remarks, but can’t let Alan Dershowitz’s “overreach and hyperbole” pass. He knows that Jews and feeling Christians view inflammatory anti-Semitism through the prism of 2,000 bloody years in Europe. If Cardinal Maradiaga had made his statements during the Middle Ages we would have witnessed a pogrom. He isn’t a lout; he’s an educated man and certainly knows the impact of his words. Yes, it was an “impromptu and unscripted” interview which relaxed him sufficiently so that he might inadvertently air his true feelings.
