The Sports Network

Former New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers on Friday.

The versatile Woodhead excelled as a third-down back in New England and is expected to play a similar role spelling Ryan Mathews in Southern California.

The 5-foot-8, 200-pound Woodhead is an excellent receiver out of the backfield, catching a career-high 40 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns for the Pats in 2012. The Chadron State product also added 301 rushing yards with an additional four scores on 76 carries.

Woodhead, who started his professional sojourn with the New York Jets in 2008, has spent five seasons in the NFL and has amassed 1,263 rushing yards on 265 carries with 10 touchdowns over 56 career games. He also has 100 receptions for 1,069 yards and four touchdowns.
