Volleyball tourney features many top state teams

a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

Some of the state’s best boys’ volleyball teams will face an early season test this weekend when they compete in the Smoothie King Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The tournament will be played at Ransom Everglades and Belen Jesuit on Friday, with the finals on Ransom on Saturday, and features four of the eight teams that made the state tournament last season.

Defending state champion Orlando Bishop Moore and runner-up Sunset highlight the field along with Broward County semifinalists Southwest Ranches, Archbishop McCarthy and South Broward.

Three other teams that advanced to the Round of 16 last year are in the tournament — Palmetto, Parkland Douglas and Lake Worth Park Vista.

A few other perennially strong Miami-Dade County teams, including Southwest, Florida Christian, Ransom Everglades and Coral Reef, will be vying for the title as well.
