A taxing burden
As a small business owner I disagree with The Herald’s position on online sales tax. For-profit businesses work pro-bono for their state governments collecting, reporting and remitting sales tax. It’s a burdensome, complicated and time consuming matter for which we receive no compensation. If Florida begins requiring my business to collect out-of-state sales tax on online purchases those burdens would be compounded exponentially. It would also put my business at a major disadvantage with online businesses in other states that don’t have the same requirement. If other states implemented the same policy theoretically my business could have to collect and remit sales taxes to 50 different state-taxing authorities depending on the buyer’s location. Most online retailers aren’t Amazon; we’re small businesses trying to get by in difficult economic times.
