The March 6 article, Carvalho may get 5-year extension, on Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s extended contract augurs a great victory for the school district. At a time when urban superintendents are in critical shortage, the board has found a gem in someone with the passion to lead a complex, often troubling, school district. Knowing his talent for communicating, it was always feared that a larger school district, or indeed the U.S. Department of Education, would soon whisk him away from Miami. It is a tribute to the board that the intent is for him to continue a worthy mission. The former science teacher, who once aspired to a career in medicine, has led with passion. It is the community’s gift that he turned instead to education.
