Doral city attorney Jimmy Morales will soon be parting ways with the city to take on a new role as city manager in Miami Beach.
Following a unanimous decision of the Miami Beach City Commission, Morales is slated to start this new job on April 1.
Doral has had a contract with the law firm Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, PA — where Morales served as one of three attorneys handling Doral’s legal matters — since June 2009.
His upcoming departure to Miami Beach means the firm can have another attorney take his place, according to City Manager Joe Carollo.
Mayor Luigi Boria also has the option of remaining with the firm, going with a new firm or opening up their own in-house legal department.
"The ultimate decision is up to the mayor, because only the mayor can nominate the city attorney," Carollo said. "The council can approve it or reject it, but the mayor is the only one who can nominate an individual or law firm."
Boria said he believes he has “done a good job” serving Doral.
Other officials echo those thoughts.
"I am extremely happy for him, and the city of Miami Beach is gaining a tremendous asset," Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez said via text. "I am sorry to lose him in Doral, but I think this is a positive step in his career path and wish him nothing but the best."
She went on to say that Morales has been "a steady, unbiased and consistently professional counsel."
