9-year-old boy starts fire in Homestead with a lighter

A 9-year-old boy who was playing with a lighter started a fire on Wednesday afternoon in Homestead, neighbors said.

About 5:20 p.m., the boy set some garbage on fire in the Hidden Grove rental community at 13815 SW 271st Terrace, west of Florida’s Turnpike.

The flames quickly spread to a sofa bed that was also in the garbage outside, firefighters said.

Neighbors said the boy dropped the lighter and ran home. The fire continued to grow into a small wildfire.

Drivers traveling southbound on the Turnpike slowed down to look at the dark smoke.

Miami-Dade firefighters extinguished the flames by about 5:50 p.m. No one was injured.
