Re the March 8 story, Controversial ‘parent trigger’ bill gets first nod: As a parent of three children, I’m horrified by the idea of allowing parents to make the decision to turn a public school into a charter school. By definition, the nature of parental involvement in a school is temporal as parents are only involved in a school while their children are attending.
Many parents have no idea how to support their children’s school efforts, as evidenced by poor grades and often poorer test scores. Being a parent doesn’t make one an expert on education. If we don’t like the way a school is performing, then fire and replace the administration; don’t hand over the reins to a group whose sole qualification is the demonstrated ability to reproduce.
