Shame on writer Jon Burstein for opening his March 8 article, 15 indicted in timeshare scam, with a reference to the drug addicts who were employed in the call center. It shows the lack of understanding of the barriers recovering addicts and alcoholics face daily and throughout their lives trying to find gainful employment as a result of their condition and its effects.
Because most addicts have accrued criminal records they are automatically stereotyped as scurrilous and untrustworthy and deemed ineligible for even the most menial of jobs. It’s likely the recovering addicts referred to in the article worked in the call center because it was one of the limited avenues open to them to earn a living.
