Report: Giants offer Cruz first round tender

The Sports Network

The New York Giants have reportedly assigned a first- round restricted free agent tender to wide receiver Victor Cruz on Monday.

According to the New York Daily News, the Giants gave Cruz a tender that is worth a $2.879 million contract this year. The tender comes with the risk as Cruz can field offers from other teams that will offer the 2012 Pro Bowl selection a longer and more lucrative deal.

New York would have the right to match any offer, and it would also be due a first-round pick from any team that signs him, should the Giants decline to match the offer.

Cruz, who signed with New York as an undrafted free agent in 2010, burst on the scene in 2011, catching 82 passes for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns. Over 16 starts in 2012, Cruz hauled in 86 passes for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Additionally, the Giants assigned second-round tenders to safety Stevie Brown and running back Andre Brown.

Stevie Brown had 76 tackles and eight interceptions over 16 games with New York last season. Andre Brown rushed for 385 yards and eight touchdowns before he was placed on injured reserve with a broken fibula on Nov. 26.
