Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were taken to three sets in their respective matches, but both were second-round winners Sunday at the $4.33 million BNP Paribas Open.

The World No. 1 Djokovic at first seemed to be cruising to victory against Fabio Fognini, but hit a bump in the road before taking a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 decision over the Italian. The top-seeded Serb is a two-time champion at this event.

Murray had a scare after dropping the first set to Russian-born Evgeny Donskoy, but the World No. 3 bounced back to take a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The British native finished as runner-up here back in 2009 and is playing in his first tournament since losing to Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open.

In their first matchup in four years, eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed nearly an hour and 45 minutes to dispose of American James Blake, winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

Australian Marinko Matosevic produced the biggest upset of the day, taking out 14th-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.

Seventh-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro advanced on Sunday with relative ease, ousting Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4 in just under an hour and 20 minutes.

No. 12 seed Marin Cilic also moved on by besting Spaniard Albert Ramos in straight sets, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

In a clash between two Americans, No. 32 seed Mardy Fish defeated qualifier Bobby Reynolds in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while 11th-seeded Nicolas Almagro defeated fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver, 7-5, 6-1.

Nineteenth-seeded Tommy Haas knocked out Pablo Andujar, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) and Bjorn Phau needed three sets to finish off No. 25 seed Jeremy Chardy, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in an hour and 41 minutes.

In other second-round action, No. 16 seed Kei Nishikori disposed of qualifier Phillipp Petzschner, 6-3, 6-2; Yen-Hsun Lu required tie breakers in both sets to defeat 26th-seeded Martin Klizan, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5); and No. 31 seed Grigor Dimitrov took out Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden with a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Elsewhere, Carlos Berlocq was able to best 22nd-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 and 23rd-seeded American Sam Querrey ousted qualifier Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-4.

Earlier on Sunday, 17th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic received a walkover prior to his match with Frenchman Michael Llodra, who was forced to withdraw with a hip injury.

The 2013 Indian Wells champion will collect $1 million.
