Police are looking for witnesses to a Friday afternoon hit-and-run car accident that left a Florida International University Ph.D student in critical condition.

The student, 43-year-old Melita Jaric, is originally from Yugoslavia and was struck while crossing the street from her home to her car, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS4.

Miami-Dade Police say that Jaric was hit around 4 p.m. while walking across Southwest 11th Street just west of LeJeune Road, and was taken to Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. The driver who injured Jaric “fled the area,” according to police.

A copy of Jaric’s resume available online identifies her as a computer technology expert with a decade of experience in software applications and hardware development. Her prior work included creating high-quality computer imaging techniques that could improve medical analysis, be used by police for evidence purposes, or even aid casinos in catching players who attempt to cheat at card games.

In that resume, Jaric listed her interests as “Ballet, traveling to meet different people and cultures, tennis, history.”
