An Oakland Park pre-K learning center was evacuated Friday afternoon while sheriff’s deputies tried to arrest a fugitive who had locked himself in an apartment across the street.
Deputies attempted to arrest Eddie Banks, 40, at his home in the 700 block of Northeast 46th Court in Oakland Park when he shut himself inside and refused to come out, said Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella.
Deputies evacuated about 30 children from the Kids in Action Learning Center at 4651 N. Dixie Hwy. at about 1 p.m. as a precaution, she said.
Banks had been arrested in the past for trespassing, theft and a firearms violation, said Moschella, and deputies were attempting to arrest him on a warrant from Florida Probation and Patrol.
No one was hurt, but a deputy shot and injured one of Banks’ pit bulls after it charged him, Moschella said.
Banks came out of the house and was arrested at about 2:45 p.m. after deputies used an irritant gas to flush him out, said Moschella, and children and teachers returned to the learning center after the standoff ended.
