Re the March 2 story, UM, county clash with mall owner over pedestrian bridge: It’s outrageous for the owner of the University Centre mall to refuse to work with the county and UM to construct a pedestrian bridge to the mall. Since 1989 eight UM students have been struck and three killed, crossing U.S. Hwy. 1 to go to that mall.
University Centre has a moral obligation for the safety of its patrons, but that doesn’t seem to matter. I suggest that the local Coral Gables neighborhood and the UM community of families, students and faculty boycott that mall and let the owner really see how his callused, short-sighted greed will cause him to lose business. People’s lives should matter at least as much as profit, not at the expense of it.
