The San Diego Chargers have released linebacker Takeo Spikes.

The 36-year-old veteran spent the past two seasons with San Diego and last year notched 78 tackles in 16 games.

"Takeo is a true professional and a class act," said Chargers general manager Tom Telesco. "We're grateful for his many contributions to the Chargers organization, both on and off the field, and wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Spikes began his career with Cincinnati in 1998, then joined Buffalo in 2003 and played for Philadelphia in 2007 before spending three seasons in San Francisco.

In 219 NFL games, all but four as a starter, Spikes has 1,737 career tackles with 29 sacks and 19 interceptions.
