Sophomore pitcher Danny Diaz recorded his third win of the season and helped Sunset shut out Ferguson 7-0 on Tuesday.

This is Diaz’ first season with the Knights, and he has showed great promise so far.

“We were surprised, [Diaz] came out and did well really fast,” coach Juan Diz said.

Junior transfer Alfredo Iser went 1 for 2 and hit a home run. He and his younger brother, Herbert, are both hitting above .300.

Michael Paez has an average above .400 and has managed at least one hit in every game.

In the third inning, the Knights scored four runs, thanks in part to junior Jorge Lopez’s triple that scored two runs.

The inning gave Sunset a 6-0 advantage.

The win improved Sunset to 7-1.

It will face Braddock at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Florida Christian baseball eyeing state semifinals

The state semifinals might be the last place you would expect to find a team that just a week earlier was giving an eight-run cushion to a pitcher selected as one of the nation’s 36 high school baseball prospects to play in the 2013 Under Armour Game in Chicago’s Wrigley Field this August.
