Law protects identity
I’m somewhat appalled by the March 1 letter, Register those guns, that recklessly called the NRA and its membership “terrorists” and blamed them for the lack of gun registration.
Your readership must be educated to Florida Statutes 790.335 which reads, in part:
A list, record, or registry of legally-owned firearms or law-abiding firearm owners isn’t a law enforcement tool and can become an instrument for profiling, harassing, or abusing law-abiding citizens based on their choice to own a firearm and exercise their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.
In light of what we saw transpire in New York with the publication of an interactive map of firearm owners, Florida’s statutory concern is well founded. This isn’t the sinister work of the NRA, but our prescient state Legislature understanding that our constitutional right to privacy is something worth protecting.
