Green notches 400th win as Springs girls trounce Ferguson

Special to The Miami Herald

It was hardly your average win for the Miami Springs softball team Friday afternoon. Taking on Ferguson at its home field, the Golden Hawks routed the Falcons 13-0 in a five-inning, mercy rule victory to move their record to 9-1. But the big news was that it marked career win number 400 for Springs coach Charlie Green.

Green became just the third coach in Miami-Dade County history to reach the plateau. The other two, Mark Schusterman (Gulliver Prep) and Scott Doan (Westminster Christian) are still active and were at 587 and 486, respectively, entering Friday’s action.

Green, who took over the Springs program in 1990, the first year the state moved from slow-pitch to fast-pitch, now has a record of 400-111 for a .782 winning percentage.

“Wow, it seems like I just started last week,” Green said with a wry smile. “This is something I’ve always enjoyed doing and it never gets old. The enjoyment I’ve always gotten has nothing to do with me but instead trying to help our girls get into school at the next level. That’s where the satisfaction has always come in.”

Springs was led by pitcher Geneva Santos. Just one day after firing a 16-strikeout no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Coral Gables, Santos took the mound again and struck out eight, giving up just one hit and went 3 for 4 with two RBI at the plate.

Crystal Ramos (2 for 3, 2 RBI), Amy Martinez (2 for 3, 1 RBI) and Nicole Borroto (2 for 3, 1 RBI) contributed, as well.
